Pope Francis Singapore 2024
Marymount Convent School Rejoices With The Church
To Welcome Our Holy Father
Spiritual preparations in MCS started on 12 August 2024.
To have conversations in spirit, our school supervisor, Sr Jean Marie Fernandez spoke with the whole school on the Pope’s visit. The sharing brought to greater awareness and knowledge on who the person on the portrait (hung in the hall) is and his role as a spiritual leader and the head of the Catholic Church.
Our daily morning hymns included hymns that would be sung at the Papal Mass on 12 September. Along with this, videos on Pope Francis and the Vatican were looped daily on the televisions at the foyer and canteen during recess and at dismissal.
The following videos were looped and shown:
(Monday) The life of Pope Francis in cartoon
(Tuesday) The Vatican for kids _ Curious Dr. Chaos _ Educational videos for kids
(Wednesday) Why Do Catholics Have a Pope
(Thursday) Fratelli Tutti animation _ CAFOD
(Friday) Tour inside St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City
Pope Francis Art Competition organised by ARCHDIOCESAN Commission for Catholic School (ACCS)
As a catholic mission school and in solidarity with the Catholic schools in Singapore, MCS participated in the Pope Francis Art Competition. We are proud that Marymount Convent girls are such enthusiastic and vibrant girls, who go all out to portray their talents and to show their love for Pope Francis as well as their understanding for the PFS theme (Unity and Hope). Proud of you, Girls, our little sheep!
With 54 entries submitted, our school was one of the 2 schools which submitted the greatest number of entries. Each participant received a goodie bag, sponsored by Cocoa Tree. We had all our students’ artwork displayed on the notice board.
One of our P1 students, Wang Qinzi was selected to participate in a recording for a short video to be screened in the pre-Papal Mass segment. Together with Qinzi’s artwork, Dominique (P4) and Elizabeth’s (P3) artworks were also selected to be framed and displayed at the Papal Residence in St Francis Xavier Retreat Centre.
MCS Choir at the Papal Mass
As we waited with bated breath for Pope Francis’ arrival, preparations were in full swing with our girls at the combined rehearsals at the National Stadium on 11 September.
Interview by Channel Newsasia, Asiaone and the Straits Times
Essabella Racquel Leicester (P4) who is part of the Papal Mass choir, was interviewed by the media on her thoughts and feeling on being involved in this historic event and how she and the school have been preparing for Pops Francis’ visit. (Video sent as attachment)
Papal Mass – 12 September 2024
The day we had all been waiting in anticipation for.
Our choir girls arrived at the National Stadium in the morning, followed by our Catholic students
and teachers. We are thankful for our teachers who spent the day at the National Stadium with our
girls, looking after their well-being and praying with them. We also thank our choir teachers,
who spent many days bringing our girls for rehearsals at the Church of the Holy Spirit, preparing
them for the mass, and at the same time, looking after them so very well.
And Yes, the school contingent had posters printed, which we held up with pride to show
Marymount Convent School’s love and prayers for Our dear Pope Francis.
