Ahuva Good Shepherd Residents Celebrate Parents’ Day with Elderly

June 13, 2017

Most of the young residents of Ahuva Good Shepherd Singapore had not heard of Teresa Teng, let alone sing her songs in Mandarin. However, they practised hard and confidently belted out “Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin” (The Moon Represents My Heart) to the delight of the elderly folks gathered at Adventist Active Centre at Kim Keat Avenue to celebrate Parents’ Day.  The audience of about 90 elderly residents from the surrounding blocks, mostly from low-income households, joined in enthusiastically to sing other oldies presented by the girls, and many gamely participated in a fast-paced version of “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”.

The beautiful bonding of young and old was a touching sight to behold. There was much laughter and playful bantering when both sides pitched their skills in picking up uncooked macaroni with chopsticks, and folding and flying paper planes. Without any prompting from staff, the girls joined the queue for food only after all the elderly were served. Many of the elderly residents said that they were impressed by the good manners of the children and appreciated the cupcakes that they made for them.

Some of the girls said that they were pleasantly surprised to see that this group of elderly were active, independent and fun-loving; and they would like to have further opportunities to participate in community services.

Audience gamely joining in “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”.
